How dumb is that? Ever since the setup of ISA ive wanted to use Packet filtering for some ports on some servers and server publishing on others. So dumb! Is this fixed in 2004?

Hi Chris,

ISA server uses IP packet filtering for his first line of defence. However, you seldom need to create them yourself. The point is that outbound access rules (protocol and site&content) and inbound access rule (web and server publishing) will create the necessary IP packet filters dynamically and on the fly.

Hi Chris,

Keep in mind that ISA is much more than a dumb packet filter based firewall.

What do you need packet filters for? They have very limited utility because packet filters do not expose the connections to the layer 7 stateful inspection mechanisms. If you use packet filters, you might as use a pix and suffer the consequences! [Big Grin]
