I have an ISA-2000 server and a number of clients. and I've configured protocal rule which is include protocal "HTTP", "HTTPS", "POP3", "SMTP", etc. for clients. But the clients can get web pages in the Internet Explorer, and can not get mails in the outlook express. Then I installed a firewall client for one client. and the outlook express can work. My question is, is there any way to let the outlook express work without intstall "firewall client" for the client? Thank you. [ February 05, 2004, 04:09 AM: Message edited by: rootsun ]

Hello rootsun:
I think you can do it without the FW Client software if configure the PCs as SecureNAT clients (check the doco, I'm not sure how to do this exactly myself). One disadvantage, though, is that you won't be able to authenticate your users for every protocol they access on the Internet - you can only configure IP ranges...
The reason why the HTTP protocols work is that your client web browsers are (somehow :-) configured to use the ISA server as a proxy server.

The two main reasons to use the firewall client are:
1. Firewall clients allow the use of secondary connections in a Prot. Def. (needed by for example MSN file transfer) 2. Firewall clients allow you to use names in Client Sets instead of ip-adresses.
What type of mail are users trying to receive/send with outlook express ?
Good luck...........

thx Dima and Groofster, but I think the OE also can be configured to use proxy. don't you think so? for example, I can use MSN Messenger through the ISA-2000. Why the OE need a proxy? it is also a MS product, it should can work with ISA-2000. Although, the FW client is good, but I don't want to install it for my 40 pcs of clients one by one.
Or, do we have an easy way to dispose the FW client? just like the Norton Anti-Virus Client which can be install for all PCs from one console.
Thanks again!

Surely. OE can work without FWC. But you have to configure hosts as SNAT-clients and you have to allow Client address set access or anonymous access. To solve the problems just look at Webproxy/Firewall logs of ISA.

Surely. You can do centralized installation of FWC via publishing it in Domain policy.
