Howdy folks

Simple question. Does it help or hurt to have a hardware firewall such as a Sonicwall in front of a software firewall such as ISA? My concern in setting up something like this is the possible latency that could be introduced.

Any tips?

Hi Tom,

If its a small shop and you're doing NAT on both firewalls, there is a nominal advantage. If you're routing between the Internet and the DMZ between the Sonicwall and the ISA firewall, there might be some performance advantages, as the Sonicwall can offload garbage traffic from the ISA firewall's deep packet and app layer inspection.

I have this configuration implemented and I think SSL-Tunnel traffic is impossible to pass through both devices.

Can anyone put a quick LAB together to see what I mean?

Internet

Sonicwall
|
Switch
|
ISA 2004 Server
|
LAN

Try to logon to www.hotmail.com and you'll see what I mean.
