Will one NIC card work? - 29.Jan.2004 11:06:00 AM

Hi, All

IÆm a beginner in this field, so please bear with me.

IÆve got a small network: server and workstations are connected using a hub. Windows 2000 Small Business Server (SBS) is installed on the server (SBS includes an ISA). At the moment there is only one NIC card in the server that connects to the internal network, and a USB dial-up modern attached to the server that connects to the Internet (for everyone to share). Now, we are going to switch to ADSL when itÆs available to us very soon. My question is if I connect an ADSL router (with an integrated ADSL modern) directly to the hub instead of putting in a second network card in the server, will the ISA in the server still work. E.g. will the ISAlogs still be able to log which sites have been visited? Will the ISA firewall still work?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Leigh

ISA Server will work in this manner. But Security will be a HUGE issue then. For example:

Clients WILL be able to bypass the ISA by putting the IP of the Router as Gateway and DNS on their client machine.

Be smart, buy a second NIC for the ISA and directly pass the Router to one of the NICs. Use the second NIC to connect to the HUB. In this way you will have better control AND security. And all that for a lousy 20 bucks for a NIC.

Good luck...........
