In the process of installing ISA Server 2004, I desire to have all DNS traffic for my network go through the ISA firewall.

Because I am running Windows 2000 SP4, I am unable to create the necessary Stub Zone, as detailed on page 500 of the "Configuring ISA Server 2004" book.

Looking at other messages in isaserver.org's Message Boards, there are vague descriptions about how I resolve this problem. There are references to glue records and the like.

Can anyone help me by identifying the explicit steps to perform in Windows 2000 to create a workaround for the lack of a Stub Zone? I'm very weak with DNS specifics, as I had a server consultant set up my network. I seek the "magic pill to cure my ill" here.

Any help is appreciated. "[Smile]"

Hi Todd,

The DNS stub zone contains only three resource records: A Name Server (NS) record, a Start of Authority (SOA) record, and a Host (A) record, sometimes referred to as a ôglueö record. The glue record allows the DNS server to resolve the name associated with the NS record.

Stub zones have a number of uses. In the scenario discussed in this ISA Server 2000 VPN Deployment Kit document the stub zone is used to resolve names on the internal network. Please refer to Windows Server 2003 Help for more information on stub zones.

HTH,
Tom

Thanks for your reply, Tom. So, is it safe to presume that I create a Forward Lookup Zone (Standard Secondary) under my ISA Server's "Forward Lookup Zone" node? Within this newly created Zone, do I merely make reference to my DNS server via the (A) record and (NS) record?

Once this is set up, is it merely an instance "that it works"?

Admittedly, I am a bit of a novice when it comes to setting up DNS.

Apologies, but I do not have access to Windows 2003 Help unless it is online somewhere.

You help is most appreciated. [Smile]
