Hi all..
At present, I have a Windows NT4 proxy server called INETCOM1 in its own domain called RMCOMMS. I have MS Proxy Server 2 with SP1 installed and a program callde Superscout from Surfcontrol which controls internet accesss
I have set up a trust relationship between it and the PDC which is called Server1 in a domain called RMNETNT. As is, everything works fine and does what it is supposed to do.
What I would like to do now is upgrade the proxy server to Windows 2000 Server and install ISA Server but do I need to install Active Directory.
I'm not familiar with it thus don't understand it. I ghosted a copy of our Proxy Server onto another HD and used it as a test bed to upgrade to Windows 2000 Server. It did the update okay and point out that MS Proxy Server was incompatible which I acknowledged but it then wanted to start installing active directory. What do I do here. This server is only acting as a Proxy Server so do I have to install AD. IF so, what do I make it. As the saying goes, I can't see the forest for the trees.
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Regards
Declan Barry

Hi Declan,
You don't need AD unless you want to create an enterprise array. You can leverage the NT SAM and do user/group authentication from that.

Hi Tom..
Found my original posting but am still confuddled. Our main network is all Windows NT4 in a domain called RMNETNT. I created another NT server in a domain called RMCOMMS and set up a trust relationship between it and the RMNETNT domain. All works fine and pupils/staff can happily surf the internet and send/receive email. (mail server is set up on PDC on the RMNETNT Domain and reverse hosting set up to allow the mail to bass back and forth through the proxy server)
Is it better to create a brand new proxy server from scratch or upgrae the existing server?
If I don't need AD, how do I create the trust between the RMNETNT domain and the New RMCOMMS Windows 2k Proxy server.
Just as an added note, we are having a new Windows 2000 network installed soon that will be installed on the same infrastructure and whilst the two networks with be "seperate" from each other albeit on the same infrastructure, the one point where they will come together is at the proxy server so that each network can access the Internet. Where would AD fit in on this situation. I won't have any direct contol over this new network as it is going to be a managed service so I want to get my system all up and running and understand it before any outside agency start asking me to chop and change settings.
Regards
Declan
