I'm working with a published WSS web site through ISA 2004 that's working for the most part. The users of this web site are running into occasional issues when they browse deeper into the site through the various lists. An example is when browsing into a picture or document list and clicking through to the actual picure or document, the user will eventually get a "500 Internal Server Error. The request was rejected by the HTTP filter".
I've looked at the HTTP filter settings (which were set to default) and tried increasing the various values, but haven't been successful.
When clicking down through a WSS (and probably a Portal site as well) the URL's tend to get VERY long and I suspect the HTTP filter is kicking in preventing a potential malicious attack, but can't find the magic value to change to resolve the issue.
Has anyone seen this particular issue or have any insight to resolve this problem?

Hi Ted,
Have you tried to max out the URL Protection settings?
Thanks! Tom

Hi guys,
I have the same issue with my wss. I max-ed out the settings but nothing changes. I see the 500 error when I try to upload files.
Ted, were you able to solve this yet?
Geert

Guys,
I just disabled my HTTP filter and now everything is working fine. Does anyone know the downside of doing this? 'Cause I'm sure this is not the safest thing to do...
Thx, Geert

Hi,
Had the same problem when uploading documents. HTTP filter "problem" is related to URL normalization. Uncheck "Verify normalization" in your HTTP policy for that rule and everything should work fine. Pity that they didn't add a wizard for publishing sharepoint, just as they did for OWA :-).

Indeed, turning off "verify normalization" did the trick.
So the question then becomes, what exactly does "Verify Normalization" do?
Thanks for the tip, Howto.

The Verify Normalization option uses code that handles URL canonicalization.
The HTTP.SYS component used by IIS 6.0 has improved canonicalization code that has been specifically written to help protect against URL canonicalization attacks.
