Hello people,

sorry for another msn messenger post, but I really need some help here. I went trough the search button and found none explaining how do you configure your FW client for msn messenger, and what do you put in the msn messenger to pass the proxy. My cenario is that users are only allowed to FTP and HTTP by connecting to a HTTP Proxy to firewall on port 8080.

I reviewed all the FW client and found none access block to msn messenger I believe it is the default instalation, but I have access to ICQ (which I'm not very found of it and I'm going to uninstall from the fw as soon as I know how). I believe I need to open specific port (1863) to msn but I don't know where or how. I'm really new to ISA... sorry.

Can anybody have the pacience to do a step by step guide for a lousy System Administrator like myself?

Thanks in advance

Silva

First things first! You DONT have to put in any proxy settings in MSN Messenger if you have firewall client installed on your client pc. All you need to do is create a protocol rule that allows access to "MSN Messenger" protocol. This protocol is there in ISA by default. All you have to do is create a protocol rule. You can create Protocol rules by going to Access Policy -> Protocol Rules. After that it's self explanatory. I hope that should solve your problem. If you still have trouble, let me know. I'm happy to help.

well Redbull, whats happenning now a days is that, MSN messenger required HTTP proxyt and authentication (ONCE ONLY) even though FWC is installed.

I think MS have made some changes in there Authentication mechanism. We experieced this problem a couple of months back and after trouble shoointg, we got to a conclusion that you need to provide HTTP proxy authentication once, and after it signes in succesfully, you can then remove the setting,,( i think it saves it some where). without doing that there was no way we could find for making MSN sign in....(remember this started to happene after we updgraded with MSN patch)

Hi Fawad,

There has been no change in MS authentication. All my clients on all my networks still connect to MSN without having to provide any http proxy authentication. This is NOT MSN Messenger asking for authentication, it is your web proxy service asking for authentication. Simply remove all http proxy settings in MSN. They're not required. Configure your clients as firewall clients. That's about all that's required.

Occassionaly, I've noticed MSN behave stupid as it sent out http requests even after removing the "I use a proxy server" checkbox. So if the above configuration doesn't work, disable the http redirector and try again. (This will only be required if you're using user level authentication). I hope this will help.
