I have a Web/SMTP server (MS IIS 5.0) that exists on a network in which the router (not ISA server) hides the existance of the IP address from the outside world.
I have a seperate ISA server (2000 SP 1 with the latest patches), that I am using to publish the webserver to the outside world, the router allows the outside world to see the ISA server which then publishes the webserver. The ISA server has 1 NIC/IP address which both the Web/SMTP server and the outside world can see. The webserver publishing is currently functioning properly.
The DNS servers that we use exist outside of our network.
The SMTP server doesn't seem to be working properly. I have the SMTP server set up to use a Smart Host that exists outside of my router. I have ISA Server set so that it allows for the SMTP server to use SMTP, DNS, and DNS Zone Transfer protocols.
From the ISA server I have attempted to contact the external SMTP server with success, and I can contact the DNS servers. I cannot however, manage to do this from the SMTP server. I have tried making the SMTP server a SecureNAT client by setting the gateway address to that of the ISA Server. I have tried server very liberal settings (such as setting the protocol rules to allow traffic from the webserver to go out) with no success.
Any hints as to what I could be doing wrong?
Thanks -Alan

Hi Alan,
I don't understand your configuration. A simple ASCII diagram would explain a lot. Just place it between the Instant UBB Code tag 'CODE' so it alligns nicely.

Here is a diagram of the network
code:
Outside/Internet | Router | | | ISA Server | Web/SMTP Server
Note: the Router doesn't allow the outside world to know that the Web/SMTP Server exists, however, it does allow the outside world to know that the ISA server exists. Also there are other machines on the network, that I have not depicted - but they should not interfere.
Hope this helps -Alan

Hi Alan,
that won't work! You should change your configuration to: code:
Web/SMTP server --- [ISA] --- [Router] --- Internet
Moreover, ISA should be installed in integrated mode and have two nics, one external and one internal.
HTH, Stefaan
