Personally I am *very* impressed with it.

The real time log viewing is a life saver.

Protocol definitions that allow you to enter multiple connections rather than having to create numerous definitions.

and even the memory usage has dropped significantly.

I have been testing it with every firewall test site I can find, nothing has got through, but everything has carried on working perfectly.

Even managed to download a content update for an xbox live game :-)

I am now planning on a complete home network redesign as things seem to be much easier to setup now.. expect lots of questions :-)

Hi ,

Yup I agree totally , this is the second product of microsoft that works perfectly out-of-the-box. ( Windows 2003 server was great too ). I must agree , Windows 2000 is the best operating system , but only with a lot of service packs etc.
Anyway : the best thing about ISA 2004 is that you can now have NETWORK rules ( internal network 1 ROUTES to internal network 2 and internal 2 NATS to external ).
In short : it's become a real firewall instead of a tuned up proxy with ipsec [Smile]
1 major shortcoming is the lack of bandwidth control. They must have had reasons not to implement it.. maybe it's slowing down the machine too much.. anyway I would really like to see it !

Kind regards,
Lex P.

Hi,

I like ISA2K4 a lot! I'm glad to be rid of protocol rules and packet filters and the introduction of firewall policies. I also like NAT traversal for IPSec which I couldn't manage in ISA2K.

Of course it's still in beta and I notice it:
1. It installed MSDE to take care of all the logs, however, it didn't configure a database, so there's just that MSDE thingy installed and that's it.
2. I regularly have problems with MMC now. Hmmm, I need to investigate still how that comes.
3. When I wanted to install ISA2K4 first, I had an error 1719. I've been looking on the MS site but everything was ok on my box according to them. So I quickly reinstalled W2K3 and problem was fixed. [Roll Eyes]

Hmm, hope Tom or any MS guy reads this because there's still something strange: why do you have to control the link translation filter through configuration/general and not through configuration/add-ins/web filters?!?

Anyway, ISA -and definetely ISA2K4- will remain my premier firewall! Great job MS guys!

Well Isa server 2004 is a big improvment compered with ISA 2000.
Now it's looks like and feels like a real firewall insted of a tuned up proxy server.
but there is some things left to improved i know it's still a beta product so i hope that microsoft will fix these problems.
what i'm talking about is this.
if you are creating a firewall policy and you put several computer in the from list, they are displayed after eachother instead of above eachother (subnets is dispalyed correct). not a big issue but it makes it alot more easy to have a proper overview if you can see all the filters correct.
another thing that is great is the logging function, it will sure make my life a lot more easy, but there is one problem with it. you cant filter trafic from AND to a computer, just to OR from a computer. would like to see a filter function simular to networkmonitor where you can filter with boolean operation.

other wise it seems to be a great product.

Hi StarChase,

I'm hoping to see some good third party bandwidth control apps when ISA 2004 is released.

HTH,
Tom

When is ISA 2004 planned to be released? We are going to be purchasing ISA Server very soon and I'm wondering if we should wait for 2004.

nevermind....found my answer
