Hello,

My ISP assigns IP addresses and DNS server IP addresses through DHCP. (cable modem)  I know Dr. Shinder mentions in the ISA 2004 book that the external interface should have no DNS server information attached to it.  He also mentions that the DSL/cable router should just renew the address from the ISP.  Is there any way to eliminate a DSL/cable router so as to have the network cable directly attached to the external interface?  Of course this works, but the external interface is assigned IP addresses and DNS server information through DHCP from the ISP which Dr. Shinder says not to do.  I would like to eliminate the router for performance reasons and for increased security.

Thanks,

Karl

Hi Karl,

Even when DHCP is enabled on the external interface, you can configure a static DNS server entry. In this case, you can assign the internal DNS server's address on the external interface.

HTH,
Tom
