My web proxy clients receive the following message when trying to download from ftp sites.

ISA Server: extended error message :
200 Type set to I.
500 Invalid PORT Command.

My ISA Server is configured in Cache Only mode. I have tried changing my Internet Explorer advance settings from enable folder view for FTP sites. I receive the same message. If I bypass my ISA server I am able to download from the site.

Any ideas.

Thanks,

Hi Adam,

when you FTP download through the ISA web proxy service, ISA is always doing active mode (PORT command) FTP to the FTP server. Normally that should be supported by every FTP server. Maybe the FTP server only accepts passive mode FTP.

It was my understanding that port and pasv modes were controlled by your browser. If you change your advance options for IE from enable FTP folder view this changes the mode of your browser from port to pasv. I have tried downloading from the site both ways and I still get the same message. Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Adam,

no, that's not true! When you are going through the web proxy server, IE doesn't talk FTP but HTTP to the web proxy service and it is the web proxy service who setup the FTP connection. Check out my article http://www.isaserver.org/articles/How_the_FTP_protocol_Challenges_Firewall_Security.html for more detailed information.
