komoman -> DNS Stops Responding (29.Jan.2003 1:57:00 PM)

I have a really strange issue where every so often ISA will stop responding to DNS queries.

I run split DNS and publish the external DNS from a separate machine. The internal DNS resides on the same server as ISA but I do not publish these services. When the DNS stops responding externally restarting the ISA services restores the functionality. I do nothing on the machine that is running DNS itself, merely restarting the ISA services automagically fixes everything.

This used to happen every month or so, but now has happened 3 or 4 times in the past 10 days. I did some searching here to see if this is a known issue but haven't come across anything just like this. My apologies if this is a repeat.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Its a very well-known issue, unfortunately. I think I've got it beaten, but I want to wait another couple of weeks before sharing my solution. The key seems to be making changes to the NetBIOS parameters in the registry. But it might be a coincidence. I'll let everyone know my finding by the middle of February.

HTH,
Tom

Did you ever post a solution for DNS problems? I have the same problem where DNS stops responding quite often.

As I understand it, this patch takes care of the problem:

I run a primary on a different firewall for redundancy, so I'm not certain of it's effectiveness.

I have the same problem with ISA 2006 running on Windows 2003 Server. It just suddenly happens without any warnings or logical reasons. After monitoring activity on the ISA server I can see that the local host suddenly denies DNS queries to external. I have the same setup and rules on a different network where everything is running smoothly.
