I'm surprised you say that Windows 2003 is more stable with ISA Server. I've got my configuration rock solid on Windows 2000 and have followed your recommendation for hardening it and don't see any compelling reason for upgrading the OS.
Having said that you know I'm going to do it - it's just too much fun not too.

I am getting ready to start evaluating ISA 2000 running on windows 2003. This is my first experience with ISA and i figured i might as well try it on windows 2003. I had not considered using win2k3 until i read the article here. I will keep you all informed as to my progress.

What is your opinion in running an upgrade instead of a clean install(yeah I know it would be better to do a clean install)? Also would a backup of my ISA settings work from W2k on a W2k3 install? Just some questions I have.

I think clean install would be cleaner in a sense that everything is new and not replace by updates.
I prefer to do clean install because then when you get a blue screen it would not be much of a problem by rebuild but when upgrade alot of the configuration is forgotten and have to do everything again (not very fun in a production environment).

Hi I have just upgraded my ISA box to W2k3. I did a straight upgrade at first and it worked fine, no problems at all just upgraded and run. But I wanted to change some partition sizes and decided to do it again with a clean install. Once again no problems at all, although when installing you get compatability errors and in event viewer but, during install you will get prompted to install Service Pack 1 once completed. (Which everyone does as a matter of course anyway). At this point I don't know if it is any more stable that Y2K as I had no problems with Y2K once I got my head around ISA anyway. But W2k3 seems to have a lot of new features in the OS. Good luck all donig I hope it is smooth for you as was for me!

Hi Jve,
That will certainly cause problems. Good to hear you got it working!
Thanks for the followup.

If find that ISA is much more stable on Windows 2003 but did anyone yet find out how to disable the socketpooling feature for smtp / ftp etc on iis 6? I'd like to use a smtp relay server on my isa box.
Thanks

ISA SERVER 2000 DOES NOT INSTALL IN UNATTENDED MODE UNDER WINDOWS SERVER 2003!
When I attempt to run ISA Servers setup.exe with the /U switch, I receive the following message box: ______________________________________________ Setup Error 688
A command line option has been used, which is valid only in Maintenance mode. ______________________________________________
Subsequent to that incredibly enlightening info, I receive this message next:
______________________________________________ Setup Error 723
Setup was unable to read configuration information from the first section of the setup file: C:\~MSSETUP.T\~msstfqf.t\setup.stf ______________________________________________
I am attempting to run the installation from the CD ROM drive and have placed the MsISAund.ini on C:\ .
Any help would be appreciated!

I have ISA 2000 set up on a Windows 2003 Server. I followed through your setup exactly. The server only runs ISA. My clients in the same building can connect to the internet but any client outside of the building cannot get to the internet. The other buildings are on my LAT table and my previous ISA server on Windows 2000 Server everyone can get out fine. As far as I can see all my configurations are the same. Any suggestions?

Hi Tony,
I've never run ISA in unattended mode on Windows 2003. Are you OEM?
Thanks! Tom

Anyone know how to install the trial version on 2003?? The instructions on MS's web site say it is not possible. How can I test it if the trial version won't run on 2003? Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,
That's true. You can't install SP1 on the trial version, and you need SP1 to install on Win2003. I check and see if they're considering a fix for this problem.
thanks! Tom

I am considering setting up an array that would consist of two Win2003 servers with ISA (integrated mode) The only thin on the servers will be ISA. Any thought or ideas?
