I have an isa server as a member of an NT domain. I have also set it as VPN server in exactly the same way as indicated in the Learing Zone. But still when I connect through my ISP, all my clients' computer seem to pass the stage of connecting/reaching to my VPN server, but all say "Remote server is not responding...." message - after the Verifying Username prompt appears.... What could be wrong ?

You may need to check that your router has got VPN ports open. I was having the same troubles, and once i had the router configuration checked and the ports opened, all was fine.
I'm not too sure which ports are needed, as the my ISP did it for me.

Hi Maxwell

be sure that the Remote Client isnŠt hidden behind a Firewall or private Lan which isnŠt routing Proto 47

I had such problem connecting to the ISA Server behind a Subneted Class B Network in Private Range which wasnŠt routing Proto 47.

Hi Charlie & Nuddi,

My ISP got me open IP Protocol 50 & 51. They were blocked. But still I have the problem.
How can I be sure that Remote Client's is not hidden behind a Firewall or Private LAN which isn't routing Proto 47. I have a Class B network but that uses a standard subnet.

Maxwell, I recently had the same exact problem as you.

Once I opened port TCP 1723 and all of port 47 on my DSL router, I was able to authenticate.

I don't think opening port 50 and 51 are going to help your ISA default settings.

Hi Everybody ,

My problem is now solved ! It's really interesting to see this thing working.
All my clients are excited ! Thanks for your advice.

Like everyone has said :
1. My ISP has blocked IP Protocol 47 on its router.
2. And when this is removed - voila - things worked.

for your information:

ip protocol 47 is for PPTP
ip protocol 50 & 51 is for L2TP/IPSEC

Hi ,

I feel like that I'm indebted to let you know that my VPN issue is resolved for good.

How it is solved ?

1. Like everyone suggested - my ISP had blocked IP Protocol 47 - by default.
2. So when that is filtering is removed - voila !

Hi Maxwell,

Good to hear you got it working! Even better to hear that it wasn't ISA Server's fault

Thanks for the follow up!

Tom
