Hello again. Here I am in Paris supporting our VPN back to North America. While it is pretty stable every now and then it stops functioning. I can ostensibly connect to the VPN, and the ISA firewall client tells me all is good and I can browse the internet. However, network resources are unavailable. I can't ping our servers neither by IP nor host name. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this behaviour and how to fix it?
I'm not sure how the hotel has their network setup by I assume it allows PPTP packets as the vpn functions at other times.
I can ping the firewall server by ip address.

Cheers.
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Is the hotel network on the same network ID as the destination network?

Thanks!
Tom

Yes, both networks are 192.168.xxx.xxx

If that's causing confusion is there a way to mitigate it? And why would it do this only sporadically?

thanks for your help. It's not really a big issue, but I really would like to understand the behaviour.

I think thats going to be your problem. As how do you distinguish between whats internal(your network) and external(network your connecting to) ip address, if they are all on the same range.

So what your really trying to say is that if you have your local networks ip range 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.150, and your remote network 192.168.0.151 - 192.168.0.255 then you will have issues??? Does that mean you need to change one side to something more like 192.168.1.151 - 192.168.1.255??? Or do you actua;lly have to use a different private IP range???
