How does one collect the info you need to play and/or HOST games (if developer of game doesnt provide anything)?

What tools needed if any?
How to analyse info?
How to determine what to setup (ex: firewall client or not, primary connections/ secondary connections , protocol rules or packet rules, etc).

Actualy it could be any program not only games. But that is my problem at the moment, and could be a good lesson.

You can try running the game, and see what ports are blocked in the Log files (use bt-patrol to get a realtime view). Then open those ports. Or look at the gaming section of this site...or ask someone!

You can use network monitor (comes with win2k) to view what ports the packets are trying to get to.
