Hello all!

I have been pondering an idea for some time now, regarding computergames that don't support gameplay on internet, but only on a LAN - that is computers connected to the same IP-segment..

Is it possible to have clients running W2k or XP set up VPN connections to a ISA server, and have the ISA act as a LAN to serve clients with same-segment IP addresses? So far it's just a theory of mine, I'll have a chance to test it in the not so distant future, but for now I'd like some opinions on this.. Anyone tried it? Is it at all possible??

Hey,
Yeah, this is quite possible. It will indeed work with most games. Some it wont however (no go with doom for example). It appears games that search for other lan games have problems, but games where you can specify an IP are fine.

I wouldnt rely on the performance though, VPN puts overhead on the connection, so the game wont be as fast as staight over the internet.

We are trying to setup a VPN between a ISA Server with clients, and a single client on the internet. Through much help from reading these forums, i have managed to get the VPN to work mostly. The VPN client can connect to the VPN network on the isa server, and it gets an ip in the range from 192.168.1.100-150, and its DNS is set too the internal ip of the isa server. The connecter can ping clients on the isa server network, and they can ping the connector, the connecter can access share by the computer name and ip, but the isa clients can only access the connect via ip. Why is this? so the connector does not show up in the network neighborhood workgroup.
When we try to make a warcraft game, the connector can't see the game. Same goes with quake3, except the connector can connect if he uses the ip of the quake server (192.168.1.xxx)

Has anyone had any luck in getting something like this to work? It seams to be the listing of the game servers.
and we have the problem with the connecter not showing up in the workgroup.

Same happens to my network too.
Computer who logs trough VPN can see list of compuetrs, cam acces shares, etc, but nobody can acces him.
For games, only those in which you can enter server ip address worked. If anyone can give a hint, it would be great.
Thanks

do a google search for "gamer's internet tunnel" from morpheus software. You can set it up to forward udp ports etc to allow for LAN games. The forums on the site are quite useful as well
