I build all of our dev and Q/A labs with Microsoft vitual server. I've used VMWare since 1.0 and have deployed GSX and ESX in several large infrastructures. I use VS now not only because we're a Microsoft shop, it's a very good product that is going to keep getting better. I always start the labs by placing an ISA server at the front end. One nic attaches to one of the physical NICs and the other to a virtual switch. This allows me to keep the dev environments secure and private while still having internet access. I also place them on the internet so that the developers can VPN into the virtual network from home and use remote desktops to access the virtual machines running in the back end.
I use differencing disk on all of the images and keep a backup daily so that I can do a point in time restore in a matter of seconds to any date that they require. ISA 2004 runs very well in all of these cases. I highly recommend it to anyone that needs this kind of infrastructure on a daily basis. I still feel that VMWare is a fantastic product but going forward Virtual Server is going to be improved to work efficiently and seamlessy with all of the Microsoft products and platforms. When I went to Malaysia last year to build and deploy the network for TechEd 2003 I brought the images over on my laptop and deployed Virtual Server on a rack of servers with a small SAN. It was awesome.

Hi Randy,
Cool!
Are you able to create virtual networks so that each virtual switch is on a different Ethernet broadcast domain?
Thanks! Tom

Absolutely, in fact the configuration for the virtual switches includes a DHCP server for each segment as well. The only thing that you need to remember is that the x.x.x.1 thru x.x.x.16 addresses are reserved for internal functions. If you choose to ignore the settings you can simply create any subnet scheme you choose and create separate segments.
I'll capture some screenshots of the new interface and try to post them this evening.

I am definately interested in this article as well. I installed vmware on a machine to play with. Out of curiosity, how much RAM/hd space do you guys use for these machines? I am also interested in setting up a cluster. I havent read the doc's yet, but it doesnt seem to be overlly apparent how to setup a shared disk drive. any help would be appreciated.

Hi sikoniko,
My main machine has 1 GB RAM and I can run 6 VMs when I need to. Four VMs works fine and that is my typical scenario testing.
HTH, Tom

Hey Tom... unfortunately you didn't answer whether or not you've finished the document on configuring VMware.
I'd really like to get a working tri-homed VMware configuration, but not sure the best way to do it.

Just checking in on the VMWare article...I know you just got back from TechEd, but do you think we may see it before July '04?

Hi All , I was wondering if Randy could point me in the direction of some useful whitepapers / files on setting up and configuring VPC's ? Also is your VMware guide about to be unleashed Tom ?
Thanks for the great site by the way.
Steve
