Hello,

I installed ISA2004 and everything seems to be ok, except the MSDE part. It has been installed, but it tells me it not connected. There is a KB article of it from Microsoft, but that doesn't help me. What can I do to get it working?

Yes, many times already. And also re-installed the product many times.

Didn't find any.

is the service running ?
Yes, the service is running without problems.

have you applied GPO's to your machine ?
I didn't apply a special ISA server GPO for the machine ISA 2004 is running on. Do I need a GPO for it, I thought only for logging to SQL I needed a GPO.

what OS are you using ?
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition

Any service packs ?
Nope, just all patches from WindowsUpdate.

which version of ISA are you using ?
ISA2004 standard.

The answers are below the question.

I posted this long time back , TS responded that there is no any issue. Yes, service runs fine. But, may have some problems , sometimes. this I noticed earlier.

But, you know, as far as I know the MSDE portion are technically used for report purpose only, if I'm not wrong....so if your reports are OK, then no worry.

Anyone having seen this MSDE issue:

During installation of ISA 2004 the actual installation procedes correctly, and I even get an installation completed entry in event log, the setup procedure just continues to hang installing "additional components (the second step of the install procedure). Eventually I kill the process, and try rebooting server which it also refuses and I have to pull the plug. After reboot nothing works, and I have to reinstall ISA 2004.

An installation without MSDE (advanced logging) goes smoothly without any problemes and everything works (except the MSDE logging of course).

Anybody knows if it is possible to install the sql db to a different place than the default?

Same issue here. Just installed ISA 2004 on a clean install of Windows 2003 std server with only Microsoft patches installed and I get the \\not connected in the SQL Server service manager. I assume MSDE is running fine because logging is working but I would like to know how to fix this. Thanks.

OK, I guess I'll answer my own questions:

"Anyone having seen this MSDE issue:":

Just wait half an hour, then the MSDE installation finishes fine - but why it sits for such a long time...

"install the sql db to a different place than the default":

Add this line to the setup.ini file in the MSDE directory: Datadir=x:\ - This moves the system databases (the master DB etc.) to x:\MSSQL$MSFW\Data

And for the original question of this thread:
"MSDE is showing not connected":

Run this C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\SVRNETCN.exe

Enable e.g. TCP/IP protocol for this instance Yourserver/MSFW.

Reboot - then the SQL server should show connected - but I'm sure the "not connected" status is purely cosmetic. The SQL logging works even with the not connected (but is doesn't look good [Smile] )

Thanks for this info! You can recieve a 5 star rating from me [Big Grin] You're right, although its been cosmetic, it just doesn't look good - and is somewhat sloppy.

Thanks,
Edgardo
