ISA Server 2004 on Win2K3 questions - 1.Jul.2005 11:26:00 AM
Guest
I am preparing to deploy ISA 2004 standard edition and I have 2 questions regarding the operating system.
1) Am I required to purchase Windows 2003 CAL's for the operating system if this server is only going to be used for ISA server?
2) Can ISA 2004 be installed on the 64 bit version of Windows 2003 Server, or only the 32 bit version?

Thanks and regards
Bill

Have no idea about CAL`s, assume your server comes with enough licenses to run/operate. All of the clients as much as i understand considered as ISA clients, not Server clients.
For 64-bit version i address you to the latest MaximumPC magazine, where they have an article about differences and productivities. According to them there are no difference if you run 32-bit application on 64-bit OS or on 32-bit OS. Its still gonna be slow as 32-bit, because OS gonna emulate 32-bit environment for it.
In order to enjoy the full productivity of 64-bit OS you`ll need to wait for 64-bit ISASERVER.
Also there are compatibility issues with drivers and complete cutout of 16-bits applications.
My personal advise - use 32-bit OS as long as 64-bit is not a "must be" option for your network.

Thanks for the reply. I had read the article you mentioned and some others regarding 64 bit Windows Server. The impression I get is that if you are currently using the 32 bit version of Win2k3 server, it is not worth an upgrade to the 64 bit version. But if you are buying now and your hardware is 64 bit capable, since the price is the same, it might be smart to buy the 64 bit version. Just not sure if ISA will run on the 64 bit version under it's 32 bit emulation.

Regards
Bill

Hi Bill,

The ISA firewall is lic'd per processor, not per user, so no CALs required.

No ISA 2004 32 bit will not install successfully on W2K3 x64 (I was using Enterprise). After install (which was slow and ended with a message indicating failure to start ISA services and suggested a restart) and reboot I got constant reboot cycle on OS startup. After recovering to last known good I found the following critical failure in the event log:
"Event ID 1060: \SystemRoot\SysWow64\drivers\fweng.sys has been blocked from loading due to imcompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver."
Also Microsoft has a W2K3 x64 application compatibility list of applications (3rd party and Microsoft) at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/x64/app64catalog.aspx
and ISA 2004 x32 has not even made it on the list.

Thanks for the information. Looks like it will be 32 bit Windows for now.
