FTP - connection closed by remote host - 13.Dec.2005 7:55:11 PM

Good day

I have placed this post before but to no avail. I have the following configuration:

I have an FTP site on one of my internal servers (NAT client). On my ISA 2004 (standard edtion) Server I have published a FTP Site (using FTP Server Publishing rule) with an Alternate Port as per Dr. Shinder's document. The problem I have is that once I have an external client (outside my domain) use ftp.exe to connect to the ftp site, he/she gets the following error:

Connected ( IP address of the external nic of the ISA Server)
Connection closed by remote host

I have also tried using the default port setup and still the same problem. I have also tried enable/disable Passive FTP but to no avail. I also increased the timeout setting but to no avail.

Both systems are running on Windows 2003 Std and for the FTP I am using IIS 6.0.

The internal FTP server has the same default gateway as the router that is between the ISA Server and the internarl FTP Server.

This is what I see in the log: "failed connection attempt"

Your time regarding this matter is appreciated

Mike

Hi Mike,

What do you mean by that?

Can you ping from the ISA server the internal FTP server?

HTH,
Stefaan

From what i understand this is what you have....

Ftp server--->router--->Isa--->Modem or Router--->Internet  Correct???
(Internal)

If so i would suggest you do this if you want to keep the ftp server away from the internal network.

(3rd NIC on ISA)
Ftp server------>Isa--->router--->Internet
(DMZ)               |
                      |
Internal Network-|

I think the problem your having is do to with how you have configure your layout. You are having a routing problem
from what i can tell.

Hi Stefaan

Thanks for the reply.

That is what I mean that the ISA server can ping the internal FTP Server.

Thanks Mike

HI Sunny C

You are correct. This is how I have it setup:

Ftp server--->router--->Isa--->ADSL Modem--->Internet  Correct???
(Internal)

I was hoping not to go the route of using a third nic (DMZ configuration). I shall keep trying using different settings on my router.

Thanks

Mike

Run a network trace of the traffic.  Does there exist any alternate route the traffic could traverse that bypasses the ISA?  Is the network rule NAT or route?

Are you routing correctly on the router to the isa server?If not trying routing all
from the router to isa to see if routing is what is causing the problem. Otherwise the problem
can be lieing at the isa end.
Any errors?

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I got it to work but still not through the alternate port. I would prefer to use an alternate port specification thought.

In order to get it to work I did the following:

1: I removed the alternate port setting in my Server (FTP) Publishing Rule and left it at "publish using the default port defined in the protocol definition:

2: Changed from "requests appear to come from original client" to "requests appear to come from the ISA Server computer" under properties of the server publishing rule and under the "TO" tab where you specify the IP of the internal ftp server.

So would this maybe mean that I have to do something on the router to allow FTP to use my alternat port? I would not think so since the traffice gets routed through the router to port 21 on the local FTP Server.

Thanks for the help thus far

You willing have to configure the router to pass on port 21 on to the isa server if you have not configure it
to pass all to the isa server.

Hi

Thanks for the reply Sunny C. I assume I have to do the same for the alternate port if I specify that?

Rgds

Yes, otherwise it will not be able to reach the isa server.
