alfarhoud -> Blocking forums (18.Feb.2006 8:57:22 PM)

Hi ppl this is a small contribution I want to make to the isaserver.org community and it’s a way to block web forums and bulletin boards because this was a requirement from my boss to avoid forums usage during work hours[:@]
Of course don’t use this info to block the isaserver.org cause it’s valuable[;)]
To start we know that the majority of web forums have the following FQDNs

http://Forum.xxx.xxx
http://Forums.xxx.xxx
http://xxx.xxx/forum
http://xxx.xxx/forums
http://xxx.xxx/vb for VBulletin
http://xxx.xxx/phpbb for phpbb bulletin board

so if we find a way to block the common variable we can do a url block policy to only block these boards
in the ISA 2004 server consol go to network object and click for a new url set

In the new url set choose any name u desire for it and click new do define a url set

Fill the url sets as follows

Thanks for your contribution.
You do realize though, that it will only stop the dumbest users.  The smarter ones will simply use one of the hundreds of anonymous proxies that exist on the web unless of course, you block all of them too.
They don't make our job easy. [:@]

Well thank god that most of the users in my work are not that smart when it come to IT  [:D]
And I think that goes for most of the places [;)]

You are right about the smarter ones it’s an on going struggle to keep them at bay[&o]
You can always use ISA monitor to check what proxy’s sites they use and block them that’s what I usually do  [>:]

Those crafty "defenders of freedom" have even come out with a portable browser that tunnels through a proprietary anonymous proxy-like server that ISA cannot see the content on.  It is "portable", in that it runs entirely off of a USB thumb drive and leaves no traces on the local hard drive and since it is proprietary, leaves no damning evidence in the ISA logs.

While it's true that many users are not that smart, these are getting to be so easy to use and easy to get that even a child could do it.  I wouldn't be surprised if children in your neighborhood know about them.

hi,

this is the filter that microsoft will integrate with ISA 2006.
http://www.futuresoft.com/products/internetfilter/internet-filter.htm

it will has built-in categories that you can block users to access such category, ( ex. adult , gambling , anonymouse access....)

it will be better than GFI [:)]
