Dear Community,

in this thread i want to talk about my experiences and solutions with/for broadcast packets for WakeOnLan (WOL) from my dmz or internet over isa 2004 to my internal network.

After I have read a lot of threads in this forum and the isa 2004 help (by the way: @tshinder: haven't found any article/guide/tutorial about "broadcasting" on this site ! ;-) ) it seemed to me as getting broadcast through isa is not possible.

But i did the following to make it possible, to wake up my pc from the internet (external-network) or from my dmz. To get this working there are 2 solutions:

1) Create a ServerPublishingRule: For example on "h**p://stephan.mestrona.net/wol/" you have the possibility to send and WOL UDP Packet to an IP Adress. This works for me with a ServerPublishingRule UDP Port 9 Receive(/Send) to 192.168.0.255.

2) Configure an static ARP Entry on ISA: "arp -s 192.168.0.20 MAC-Adress" ; So i'm able to use "wakeonlan -i 192.168.0.20 MAC-Adress" on a linux box in my dmz.

But still there is one question: Why does ISA server block broadcast packets (FWX_E_BROADCAST_PACKET_DROPPED) even when there is an access rule with coresponding protocol which should let traffic flow from e.g. dmz to internal (or vice versa) subnet braodcast adress e.g. 192.168.0.255 (wakeonlan -i 192.168.0.255 MAC-Adress" does not work --> FWX_E_BROADCAST_PACKET_DROPPED) ?

Is there anyone out there, who can explain these circumstances to me ?

Thanks in advance for feedback,
ontae
