I get a runtime error with the Cache Directory Tool.  Help => About gives no version info but the cachedir.exe file properties reports it as 4.0.3440.274.  Is there a newer version?

Hmmm.... only 15 hits and probably 10 of them are bots. :(

Nobody using the tool?
Nobody getting the error?
Nobody want to verify version?

Is there some small theoretical size limit for the cache that I may be exceeding?  The tool really grinds for a very long time with the list constantly sorting, making it difficult to use before the fatal error ends it all.

I manage my ISA through RDP.  Could that be the problem?

If there is suspected cache content problems, is the only solution still to wipe out the entire cache?

BTW, the link to DL the tool is:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=88117626-D72C-4CC8-A15F-C1FBDBCFF688&displaylang=en

I would just download it again, but if the old one is stuck in my cache, I would never know if there is a newer one unless I dumped the whole cache. :(

Why can't MS provide real version info on their DL page?
<edit>OK, so it was a rhetorical question.
It was just a rant over why MS cannot be consistent in their versioning.
Nothing in Help => About... We shouldn't have to go looking for the EXE and DL'ing the latest off the web to compare them.
BTW, I did DL it now and got 4.0.3443.591

Still getting the error.

Nobody using the tool?
Nobody getting the error?
Do I scare people off by intimidation or do I just piss them off?

If by home directory, if you mean "C:\Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\" then YES, that is where I put the files.

I have 4 gigs for the cache.

LLi , have u tried Disabling the Cache and then deleting its folder, then re-enabling the cache and then use the tool again.

i use it with 20 GB cache and never had problems except once.

i had a corrupted cache , and it wasnt from the cache, or ISA , it turned out i had a bad blocks on that specific partition, i changed the HD that contains the cache and then problem was solved.

i hope u dont need to change the HD also  but try first to delete the current cache folder and then re-create it and see if this helps.

Dang!
I cleared the cache using the DelCacheContents.vbs script below and now the Cache Dir Tool doesn't list anything at all.
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
' This script deletes all of the content stored in the ISA Server cache by
' deleting the cache content files stored on all the cache drives that are
' configured on the local ISA Server computer and then restarting the Firewall
' service, which creates new cache content files.
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Sub DeleteCacheContents()
' Create the root obect.
Dim root  ' The FPCLib.FPC root object
Set root = CreateObject("FPC.Root")
'Declare the other objects needed.
Dim server        ' An FPCServer object
Dim cacheDrives   ' An FPCCacheDrives collection
Dim cacheDrive    ' An FPCCacheDrive object
Dim fso           ' A file system object
Set server = root.GetContainingServer()
server.StopFirewallService()
Set cacheDrives = server.CacheDrives
Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
For Each cacheDrive In cacheDrives
cacheFilePath = CacheDrive.Name & "\urlcache\Dir1.cdat"
fso.DeleteFile cacheFilePath
Next
server.StartFirewallService()
WScript.Echo "All the cache content files have been replaced by new files!"
End Sub
DeleteCacheContents

Well... at least the error message is gone.

I suppose the first thing that will come to people's mind is that it isn't caching, but my daily report says it is.

Oh crap... now it's working.
Wish I knew what I did to get it going.  The only change I made was to add the Windows Update Cache rule that came with SP2.

I think you are missing the cronology of events.

1.  tool was broken
2.  deleted cache with vbs script
3.  tool no longer errors but shows nothing
4.  looked around in ISA at the cache settings and could not find anything out of sorts
5.  tested tool again, still nothing
6   enabled the WU cache rule
7.  the tool now works

Don't you just hate when there is no good explanation?

and i have this information in the event viewer:

The description for Event ID ( 14167 ) in Source ( CacheDir ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: E:\urlcache\Dir1.cdat, The operation completed successfully.

are u getting this also LLi ?

The last one I got was on the 16th but I think they only come on reboot or cache file manipulation so would not expect anything newer.

Anyway... steps 6 & 7 seemed to be the magic combination.  Don't remember what direction I was facing at the time or if I was standing on one foot.

i have enables/disabled the WU cache rule

disabled caching and redfined it.

disable caching , delete the cache folder and redifned it

and still the tool showing 0% .

does this mean ISA now is not caching anything ?

In what order did you do the above?
Try a different order.

Check your daily report (assuming you run one) to see the cache stats.
