rszarko -> Vista - VPN yellow triangle - Limited Connection (31.Jul.2007 12:16:10 PM)

Hi Folks,

I thought I'd pass this one on.  It was a problem for a couple of weeks and we finally figured it out. - Rick

Issue:  VPN with Vista - When connecting to the VPN a yellow triangle appears on the network Icon in the task tray.

Symptoms:  Users with Vista trying to access a corporate VPN would connect but would be unable to connect to any resources or surf the web and then would be disconnected from the VPN after a few minutes.  They would also see a yellow triangle appear on the network connection in the task tray indicating limited connection.

Conditions:  PC/Laptop must be Vista  32-bit or 64-bit.  This condition can happen on both wireless and wired connections.

Cause:  This problem occurs because the route from the client computer to the remote VPN server is set up on a network adapter that has the lowest route metric. The route is set up whether the network adapter is in a connected state or in a disconnected state. If the network adapter that has the lowest route metric is in a disconnected state, the route is invalid. Therefore, you cannot access any resources on the remote VPN server.

Actual MS Article is here:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;930163

Resolution:  A hotfix is available in two versions.  Please download and install the version specific to your versions of Vista.  This should resolve the issue immediately.  Microsoft will be rolling this fix into the pending SP1 for Vista this fall.

Regards,

Rick

Hi Rick,

Thanks! The scenario doesn't make any sense to me, but maybe someone will understand it.

Hi Tom,

I Just tried it and had no problems.

I looked into my Windows Update History and i found out that the 930163 update was retrieved from my WSUS server.

Hi Tarek,

OK, thanks for the update. I haven't needed to use a Vista client yet for VPN, but I'll keep this in mind if and when I run into Vista related VPN problems.

Thanks!
Tom

Zulan -> RE: Vista - VPN yellow triangle - Limited Connection (24.Aug.2007 9:20:03 AM)

At first it didnt work for me. I installed this patch, it then worked..... once :-( Now it works semi ok. Remote desktop through vpn works fine, ping works, but I can't access the servers using \\server, I get a 0x80070035 (The network path was not found)

Hello.,

In my setup, i put the wireless AP directly on ISA Server as a external network, the problem described by Zulan, also happen to me if i used EAP, and beside access to DFS folders being blocked, group policy updates also fail, i think this happen because the certificated used is not valid for smart card logon, my laptop donīt have smart card reader and if i use MSCHAP V2 and set the server and client to refuse NTLM and LM, authentication fails, but is i set both of them to use NTLM v2, it works ok, but what is strange is that i set the internal wired network to use IEEE 802.1X authentication, on the windows vista pcs, using EAP(PEAP), and everthing works ok, need to investigate a little bit more why this is happening...

I'd just like to say thanks for posting this fix! I was having this exact issue and my googling was getting me nowhere, going on a tangent thinking it might be something to do with ISA I thought i'd search here, applied this fix and now all of my vista clients will be back in business. Still smacking myself over lack of WSUS which appears would have resolved all issues to begin with!

So once again a big thank you!
