filippg -> Authenticated POP3 and IMAP on ISA? (4.Jun.2008 12:03:25 PM)

Hello,

is ISA (2006) able to authenticate plain text (unencrpyted) POP3- and IMAP-Connections?

By now, we do a simple forward for POP3 and IMAP (and SMTP) on our ISA-Servers and authenticate only on the Backend (Exchange 2007 CAS). There is no encryption (TLS/SSL) and the logins are plaintext (this is okay since it's a private Network).
Now, we also need an authentication on the ISA-Server. Since we cannot change the setup on customer's site, we can't activate encryption/change the authentication type (or Roll out Firewall Client). Can ISA only forward this streams, or can it be made protocol aware and check the authentification in the stream?

Thank you very much for your help

Filipp

These protocols are server published and hence they cannot be pre-authenticated.

ISA has a POP/SMTP application filters, so these will kick in to provide a level of protection, but maybe not enough for what you want...there is no ISA filter for IMAP unfortunately :-(

Limiting by source IP is about as good as you can get with server publishing...

Hello,

thank you for your answer - even though it is very unpleasant for me ;-)

Bye
