Hello,

We are planning on using ISA 2006 to publish SharePoint and as a internet proxy for internal users.

My question is: For external load balancing and high availability we want to use a hardware device such as Cisco CSS. For internal load balancing and high availability we want to use NLB.Is there any issues to be had with that configuration? Does ISA care how the interfaces are load balanced or that they are done so in two different ways?

You will need to enable NLB on both internal and external interfaces to achieve bi-bi-directional affinity and to meet normal, best practice. You would then use the NLB VIPs for outbound traffic.

However, there is nothing stopping you using the HLB for inbound traffic and using the ISA external interface dedicated IP addresses in the HLB setup. I haven't used this combination before, but it sounds viable to me...

Why not use NLB for inbound if you are going to use it for outbound? If setup properly, NLB can actually be pretty impressive. I have used it with a large array to protect Exchange in a University with approx 30k users and it held up very well...

This may be worth a read: http://blog.msfirewall.org.uk/2008/10/resource-guide-for-using-microsoft-nlb.html

Cheers
