Greetings all,

This is more of a Windows question than an ISA one but someone here might have the answer -

Im using group policy to set IE to use a PAC file but have found this only works on client workstations when the user is a local admin.

Am trying to find a way of doing this for non-admin users who presumably dont have permissions to write to their HKLM registry.

I've tried manually importing these keys for them but that doesnt fix it -

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"ProxySettingsPerUser"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"AutoConfigURL"="[my pac file here]"

any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Dan

Why not apply the Group Policy at the user level, not computer level?

Cheers

from my very limited understanding of it you need both

I couldnt get it to work just with user policies

Not to my knowledge, computer is optional.

Actually it says in that article

"When you modify Group Policy settings that are based on a template, user configurations are saved in HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU), and computer configurations are saved in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM). "

says the policy paths needed are:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components

I seem to be back to square one...

That doesn't mean you have to do both!

Trust me, we deploy an autoconfig script URL internally and we only use the user configuration in GP.

Cheers

thanks, that's great news as it would solve the problem I have at the moment - just need to work out what Im doing differently.

Any idea how this works? I tried just importing this reg key on a test host but no joy

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"AutoConfigURL"="my pac file"

cheers

Follow the Using the Internet Explorer Maintenance extension section in the above technet article.
