Hi all

I am planning the configuration of some servers that will be located in a remote data centre - with our business continuity provider.

As always when co-lo is conerned, power consumption is the key; I have a limited power allowance to play with so I want as few physical machines as possible.

I will have 2 x physical servers running VMWare ESXi.  Each server will host 3 virtual servers.

The other 2 servers I need are a terminal server and an ISA server.  The ISA will connect back to our office ISA and create a VPN so file transfers can be sent to the co-lo servers.

I did intend having 2 x physical servers for the terminal server and ISA server.  The idea is that users would be able to connect to the terminal server over a vpn in order to run applications in the event of a disaster.  There would probably be 12 users max doing this at any one time.

However, this takes me very close if not over the power allowance and raising the allowance is very expensive.

So, I've been wondering if I can dispense with one of the physical servers.  This means one of the following:

1. Running ISA as a virtual server.
2. Running terminal server as a virtual server.
3. Running both ISA and terminal server as virtual servers.

None of these options appeal.  I understand that running terminal server as a virtual server is not good for performance.  I'm also wary of running ISA as a virtual server but that might be the most realistic option.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Regards

Paul

IIRC correctly Terminal services is not supported to run as a VM.
ISA 2006 SP1 does, but make sure you design it carefully.

Yes, I've read different things in different places about running terminal services as a VM.  From what I understand, it will run but performance will definitely need tuning and some people say it shouldn't be attempted at all.

As you say, ISA apparently can.  I should mention that it's ISA 2004 I'd be using (our old licence) rather than 2006 for the business continuity servers.

What worries me slightly is the strain that may be put on the network cards of the server hosting the ISA VM.

Oh, you posted it in the ISA 2006 forum instead of the ISA 2004 forum
ISA 2004 isn't supported to run in virtualized environment (unless something has changed recently)...
