Cannot restore Site-To-Site VPN - 31.Aug.2009 12:12:12 PM

Hello everyone,

Our main location is running ISA Server 2004, or remote location was running ISA Server 2006.  The we lost the ISA Server 2006 to a bad motherboard.  I have the XML configuration file backed up.  So we took one of our non-essential servers, loaded ISA server 2006 on it, installed a second Ethernet card, plugged in all of the external IP Addresses, changed the local IP Address to match the original ISA Server's IP Address, and then I restored the original XML file.

I have been trying for four days to restore the Site-to-site VPN which was originally running on IPSec, but I am trying to get it on PPTP as well.  I even flew down there for a day trying to get it to work.  The remote site does have Internet access now, but I cannot re-establish the Site-to-site VPN.  I cannot delete the connections and try again because there are so many rules in the Firewall settings.

I am not the best at firewalls and VPN's.  I am not sure what to look for.  I don't see any error messages or any status other than a big 0 in the dashboard for site-to-site VPN.  I realize the hardware changed, but  nothing else should have changed, or am I missing something?

I would deeply appreciate any feedback or ideas of what to look for.  Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

troubleshooting IPSec VPN is a difficult task. Some guides can be found here at www.isaserver.org:

Other option will be using a more secure and fast VPN connection as PPTP/L2TP: http://blogs.isaserver.org/shinder/2006/04/02/reason-456-for-using-l2tpipsec-over-ipsec-tunnel-mode/

About your firewall policies, you can backup only them if needed. Just right-click on Firewall Policy node and export them.
