We have two OWA (Exchange2003) servers in an NLB configuration.

Users come through an ISA server (acting as a proxy) to hit the OWA NLB cluster.

Since OWA views this as one connection (same source IP), the NLB does not truly work...one servers gets all the traffic, the other does not get any.

Is there any way to publish NLB OWA through ISA to avoid this?

Hi,

If you are using NLB on published servers, you need to configure your publishing rules to "forward the original client IP address" under the 'To:' tab. If not, all source IP addresses appear to be froma  single source (ISA) and NLB affinity will send all requests to the same NLB node.

For this to work, you will need to make sure that the published servers are configured to return Internet traffic via the publishing ISA Server. This can be done via internal routing or by way of the default gateway definition on the published servers. YMMV depending on your networking setup...

Ideally, you remove NLB from the Exchange servers and upgrade to ISA Server 2006. Once upgraded you can then use a new feature called web server farm load balancing to achieve the same result, only better

Cheers

We will see about the ISA up gradation further. But please help in my current scenario.

Can you provide me the KB articles for NLB OWA with ISA publishing for ISA 2004 version & about affinity in NLB.

Thanks in Advance.

Not sure if there is an article on that...that's just how NLB works, irrespective of ISA...

It sounds to me like NLB may not be functionining properly - testing from an internal client may help with testing that as per my other reply...

Cheers
