I am going to add a second node to an enterprise array. Will there be any service outage when I do this? I've built the OS the same, just need to run the ISA installer to install the services.

Any special precautions I need to take?

Do I need to add the load balanced VIP's to the second node?

I have imported all the SSL certs to it so that is ok.

Thanks

Hi,

Adding second node is not going to cause any outage in normal condition except it is using NLB. With it there are some chances.

You only need the ISA installer on the Server to start the installation. The Certs are exported so that is done. Just make sure the Private keys and the Root Certs are installed.

Did you have NLB setup on your old ISA Server?
Do you wish to put in the CSS on the new server as well.

Thanks
Kumar

Thanks Kumar,

Yes. I set up NLB on the first node because I was planning on adding this second node. The first node already has a CSS installed.

Thanks for the info. Make me feel better about doing it.

I plan to do it during one of our maintenance windows anyway, but it makes it easier to get the change approved when I can say it won't impact production.

Thanks!

Pretty sure this applies to ISA Server 2006 too...

Configuring NLB When Joining a Server to an Array

When you set up ISA Server and join the server to an existing array, ISA Server enables NLB integration for this new array member if NLB is enabled for the entire array. However, you may not want the NLB service to start automatically when installation completes, for the following reasons:
  • You might want to review the new array member configuration before joining it to the NLB cluster. Thereafter, you can start the NLB service on that array member.
  • In some cases, existing client connections may be affected when a new array member joins the NLB cluster. For this reason, you might want to schedule starting NLB on the new array member only when there is relatively little network activity.

To ensure that ISA Server does not automatically start NLB on the new array member, create a batch file, looping execution of a single command nlb suspend. Run this batch file when you install the new array member.

When NLB is configured on the new array member (after Setup completes, and while the batch file is still running), the NLB status is Suspended. To join this array member to the NLB cluster, start the NLB service, as described in Starting or Stopping a Service in this document.

You also may need to think about considerations for using the NLB with the CSS on array members as discussed in Question 9 here.

Cheers

JJ
