Hi All,

I have a couple of basic questions that I thought I'd run by you experts for some advice!

I have recently started a new job, and have inherited someone else's mess! To keep it short, all the servers are old, and the infrastructure is a nightmare. Unfortunately, I can only get a limited amount of cash to upgrade the system, so it is important I get some key issues solved.

I have been approved to get a new server, which I would like to install ISA for proxy, and firewall services. I also need it to provide the following services:

- Exchange server: Front-end configuration providing RPC proxy to the back-end exchange server.
- Ftp server
- WSUS server

I have a feeling that a single box won't be able to provide all of these services. I believe setting up a ftp server is quite straight forward, but I'm not sure if WSUS is compatible to run on an ISA server itself.

I would appreciate someone's opinion about what I have proposed, and whether or not it will work or is a suitable solution.

Regards,

Dean Hislop

Hi DB,

It might be possible to make work, but it won't be secure, as you don't want to put Web services like WSUS and FTP on a firewall.

That said, I have placed the RPC proxy on the ISA firewall and allowed access only to the /rpc directory, which is pretty secure.

HTH,
Tom

Hi All,

Thanks Tom, it really isn't an ideal solution.

Just to verify, do you see any major issues using an ISA box as a front-end Exchange server with RPC proxy enabled?

Thanks again,

DB Hislop
