I've got MSN Messenger to work through the ISA box here on our LAN. However...there is a group of users who want to be able to use MSN user created chatrooms through their web browsers. They want to use this chatroom outside of the firewall with other users outside of our network to save on long distance phone charges (great idea). I cannot find any documentation on how to allow this MSN Chat room access. I've created a group for them here and allowed access via the default MSN and MSN Messenger protocol rules. I've even checked some help files and allowed power 1863 in and outbound. Still no luck. I can connect because I've created a test group for us admins that allows all IP Traffic...so we know it works with all traffic working...the trick is to get the port or more info on chat sessions. When they are attempting to connect...I hop onto the TOOLS and then CONNECTIONS portion of their MSN client and it states "you are connected directly to the MSN server (no firewall)". These clients have the firewall client installed as well as a web proxy configuration in their browsers (IE 6).

Any help is appreciated!

Hi Nouellette,

If you want to save on long distance charges, they should be using NetMeeting and the H.323 Gatekeeper. General chatrooms are a big ole security risk, if you ask me.

However, check out the Games site here at ISAserver.org. There is some information on how to configure the IM'er.

Thanks Tom,

After reading several articles...I agree...MSN seems to be more trouble than it's worth and a huge security risk. I opted for AOL Instant Messenger which maybe seems a bit more controlled...less ports to deal with and both the Chat and IM features work in the predefined definition.

FYI you need to open 6667 to use MSN Chat!
