Hi Tom and all,
Ok. I have been through the book, and the learning zone and I now confused about DNS forwarding.

In one article it refers to problems an exchange server might have with DNS forwarding in resolving email. On other articles it refers setting up forwarding so internal clients can resolve public domains.

Right now when I run nslook on public domains like yahoo I get timeouts on the first attempt. When I run it again I get a response. Also I am getting email getting misdirected into the system mailbox. So I am getting very confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Andrew,

The time out is not too unusual if the name isn't already in the cache. You'll see it the second and subsequent times, so that's not a problem.

Make sure to configure the Exchange Server to use an external DNS server. You can see an example of how to do this in the Exchange Console in my Exchange Publishing article.

DNS can be challanging if you don't have a lot of experience with it. You might want to check out our Troubleshooting TCP/IP book

Also, I recently put up another DNS article over at www.isaserver.org/shinder, so check that out too. The second part will be available sometime next week.
