Hello, I am having trouble sending email to a select few domains. I can send and receive mail fine to almost everyone, but occasionally there are domains that I can not send mail to. The message tries to send and resend and two days later it quits. Can anyone give me some insight into why this may be happening?

Here is the email error that I am receving back:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'cust@customer.com' on 9/19/2002 10:14 AM
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or contact your administrator.
<Exserver.mydomain.com #4.4.7>

Thank you

I am still having a problem sending email to a couple domains. Can anyone give some insight as to why they THINK it is happeneing. Is it on the recipient's end? Although they are receiving mail from other people just fine...

Here are two of ther errors I am getting in the application log of our Ex2k server.

Source is MSExchangeTransport
Catefory is ConnectionManager
EventID is 4000

1: Message delivery to the remote domain 'customer.com' failed for the following reason: The connection was dropped by the remote host.

2: Message delivery to the remote domain 'home.com' failed for the following reason: Unable to bind to the destination server in DNS.

Thank you in advance

Hi kirkm,

they are a number of reasons why this could happen. I would tackle the problem as follows:

1) make sure that the MX record DNS lookup for those domains are working. You should allow DNS Query (UDP port 53 send/receive) and DNS Zone Transfer (TCP port 53 outbound) in a protocol rule for your internal DNS server. The reason is that sometimes the DNS lookup answers are bigger then 512 bytes and that can't be sent through UDP.

2) check out the IP Packet Filter and Firewall log on ISA. Maybe you can find there an indication who explains that behaviour.

3) if the above don't give you any clue, take a Network Monitor trace to see what is really happening.

HTH,
Stefaan
