Guys,
I have been a member for about 4 months or so and I need to bring up an issue. 60 percent of the problems that I respond to have a direct connection to people not understanding how a particular protocol operates. I have taken the liberty of listing the most used protocols and listing some basic information on them.

Protocol:
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
USE: Transfer Files over a Network
Port: 21 (TCP)
Port: 20 (Data Connection, Active FTP only)
Port: Random Port for Passive FTP
RFC: 765
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc0959.txt
Stefaan covers this in great detail here
http://www.isaserver.org/articles/How_the_FTP_protocol_Challenges_Firewall_Security.ht ml

Telnet (Virtual Terminal)
USE: Allows a user to create a Termial and peform remote commands on the machine
Port: 23 (TCP)
RFC: 318
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc318.html

SMTP (simple mail transport protocol)
Use: Transfer Internet based email to Servers
Port: 25
RFC 821
INFO: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc821.html

DNS (DNS)
Use: Resolves Names to IP address's
Port: 53 (TCP/UDP)
RFC: 1034
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1034.txt[/URL]

HTTP/S
USE: Allow viewing of Webpages (primarily)
Port: 80 (HTTP) 443 (HTTPS)
RFC: 2626
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2616.html

Pop3 (Post office Protcol)
USE: Allow the retrieval of mail located on a Pop3 Server
Port: 110
RFC: 1939
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2616.html

LDAP
USE: In the MS world, used to query Active Dirctory
Port: 389
RFC: 1117
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1777.txt

Hope this helps,

Let me know if you need and furthr research

nice info..any idea what ports/protocol is used by the microsoft VPN client? I am trying to make a VPN connection from behind an ISA server to another ISA server. The target ISA server accepts connections just fine from joe user who is connected via their ISP but when Itry it from behind another ISA, it never connects. I suspect I need to define/enable outbound connections for this but do not know the ports involved. Any insight appreciated
