linux rsync through isa server - 16.Mar.2005 3:28:00 PM

I have a Linux user on our network, using Gentoo, which relies on rsync to run its updates from the Internet. I found a package called ntlmaps which acts as a localhost proxy, and passes ntlm authentication to the ISA server - this allows a browser like Firefox to work seamlessly with ISA as a web proxy client on the Linux box.

However, even though normal browsing works now, ntlmaps does not work with the rsync-based update tool (called Portage). I have enabled rsync outbound port on the ISA server, but no luck yet. Anyone had any experience with this? The Gentoo boards folks are not ISA-server savvy. BTW, SecureNat client is not an option. Policy requires everyone to have the same gateway in this subnet. Thanks!

There's a couple of challenges here.
1. How do you give the the *nix box access at all? See Allowing Unix's through ISA
adn then 2 How do specifically allow rsync.
I've zero experience with rsync but did some quick research
A search on google for "rsync ip port" found (amongst others)
which indicates rsync uses port 873 tcp and UDP
You'll need to create a protcol definition for these ports, allow access to the client set (that is the *nix box) and give it a go.

Let us know if you have any joy...

Hi isathekid,

why is a SecureNat client not an option? Can you elaborate on that a little bit?

A non-Windows box can only be a SecureNAT client for non-Web based protocols!

While I hate to resurrect dated threads, for others looking for this information gentoo also has an update tool that will work through ISA.

It's called emerge-webrsync and it will get a snapshot of the portage tree (although these can be up to 24h old.)

I did not bother setting up rsync through our server as an alternate means was provided by this distribution.

Hopefully this will help someone else looking for the same information.
