Hello again,
I am having problems with chain errors and I am almost certain this is because my proxy server only uses the external ISP DNS to resolve names. I want it to resolve using our internal server, but our internal server cannot forward DNS because it is behind the ISA server.

I'm not really sure how to go about forwarding DNS requests from my internal server to our ISP server. Do I need to setup a firewall client on the internal server? I tried setting up some kind of port forward on the ISA Server but the requests never got through, so I think perhaps that is not the best way to go about it.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Just create an Access Rule on the ISA firewall that allows outbound access from the DNS server to your exteranl forwarder.

HTH,
Tom

Tom,
Thank you for your reply, but I have to be missing something.

I make an outbound rule to allow a DNS query to our ISP DNS server from the ISA server. I know it works because I can use NSlookup on the ISA Server.

I created a publishing rule to publish the external server. I then set the forwarder on the internal DNS to point to the ISA Server. Yet I still cannot resolve external names. I don't see the requests come in when I monitor the ISA server, and if I try to raw-connect to port 53 of the ISA server I get connection refused, but the ISA log shows the connection was allowed, just never forwarded along. Both TCP and UDP 53 are published. What am I missing?

Thanks,
-Jeff
