Hi phihunglangtu,

I tried the same method too, and indeed, it does not hide the icon. Let me check into this and see if there's a way to do it. In general I recommend not hiding the icon, because it makes troubeshooting more difficult.

Thanks!
Tom

The problem is that if I leave the client unhidden they will get disabled by users who don't want to use it.

Hi Shoult,

That is a good security measure. If they disable the Firewall client, then they will not be able to reach the Internet. Can't get much more secure than that! [Big Grin]

HTH,
Tom

Is it possible via GPO or an ini file to set the Firewall Client Icon to be hidden by default? Or is there a registry entry that I could change via a VBS script at user logon so that they do not see the Icon in the taskbar?

Hi all

the solution is install MFC 2000 and ISA Server 2004, means that you'll hide that icon.

Thanks.

What's the main differences between Firewall Client 2000 and the 2004 version? I have heard by some that the FWC 2004 is faster than the 2000 version.

Does anybody out there know how to disable the icon. I saw that in 2000 you could add a registry entry, I tried the fix, but it didn't help me with the 2004 FWC.

Hi M,

There is a registry entry, but you DO NOT want to disable the icon. I've tried it both ways, and the troubleshooting issues just aren't worth it -- there's a reason why MS has is showing by default.

Hi Tom ,

Could you post that key ?
We have students and we really would like to disable that icon anyway [Smile] Even if it's more trouble than good we would like to try it out in a test environment.

Hi All,

If some of you do want to hide the Microsoft Firewall Client Management icon just open

<your_drive>:\Documents and Settings\<your_profile>\Application Data\Microsoft\Firewall Client 2004\management.ini

and change

TrayIconVisualState=0

to

TrayIconVisualState=1

It seems you can control this only for a profile, I tried to play with the management.ini file under All Users, but no luck.

Cheers,
Stanley.

The main difference between the old and the new client is that traffic between isa2004 and its native client will be encrypted.

I am unable to replicate your problem with hiding the firewall icon.. I simply checked "hide when connected", no problem, works on all 2000 and xp clients on my network.

Hey guys,

Exactly. However, I must repeat in strong words DO NOT DISABLE THE FIREWALL CLIENT ICON. The only time you want to do this is to disable when connected, and I do NOT even recommend that setting.

Tom

The thing is , our students are very smart and we don't want them to know there's a firewall client installed [Smile]
On top of that , ppl tend to click on anything they can ( that's why we removed the network icon, lotsa people accidentally clicking on it )

I'll wait your solution Tom.

( preferably a reg key so we can do this thru GPO , not an ini profile solution )

Any one who works in a school knows that buttons are there to be fiddled with and cause unlimited admin hassles
the util is still there for any admin user to run manually
