VPN Connection Issues Behind ISA - 17.Feb.2005 5:27:00 AM

I'm running into a problem I didn't have before, and I'm not sure what the reason for the problem is.

I have a gateway router attached to the Internet, and behind that an ISA 2004 box (temporary setup due to some ISP issues that will be resolved soon). Anyways, from a PC directly connected to the gateway router, I can use PPTP to connect over the internet to a remote office.

From a PC (Xp Pro SP 2) behind the ISA 2004 firewall, I can't connect to the same VPN server. I get this error:
Error 619: A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed.

If I try the same VPN connection from the ISA server (to the remote VPN) I get a slightly different error:
Error 628: The connection was terminated by the remote computer before it could be completed.

I have a rule configured in ISA to allow PPTP access from the Internet and Localhost networks to the External network, as well as an allow all rule. It seems to be a problem with the ISA doing something to the VPN, but I can't figure it out.

Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks!

Hi Dac,

Is the router configured to allow outbound GRE?

Thanks!
Tom

This describes my problem exactly.

Although even if i connect the modem straight to the ISA and run a PPPOE dialup connection i have same issue.

I am at the point of re-installing the ISA again and (now that I have it) following Tom's book step by step.

Others in another thread have said modem, and I am waiting on another to be delivered so I can try that theory.

Everything was configured properly.

When I got my static IP addresses for the ISA box and hooked it right up to the DSL modem, it started to work correctly again.

Not sure what was going on, but it all seems to be working right again.

Hi,

I having a problem with the communication with ISA to Local Remote Network. The tunnel is established successfully. I can ping from internal network to remote network and vice versa, but from ISA Machine (Windows 2003+ISA 2004) i can't communicate. It display:

"Negotiation ip security" and don't receive any reply.

Am i missing something ???

Thanks.

Edson.

Hello,
i also faced this problem many times but  i fixed it, i also got some help from this website error628 , hope someone might get help from this article.
It is generally an issue with your modem, phone line, or a blocking port. This article answers the question how to fix error 628 Windows 7.
Contact ISP to Check the Phone Line
   Upgrade the Network Driver
   Repair your Network Configurations
   Reinstall Modem Device
   Disable the Firewall Protection
