Problem : Attempts to establish a VPN connection to my network return "Error 678: Remote computer did not respond".

Context :
W2K3 SP1 with ISA 2004 as VPN server/internet gateway.
Two NIC's.
ISA server is in the local domain as a member server.
I've been through the VPN wizard a couple times, confirmed the VPN Listener was present on "External Networks".
Remote system attempting to connect is XP Pro.
All service packs and hotfixes are installed.
VPN service is configured to use domain authentication (no RADIUS involved).
External NIC is connected to a fixed IP broadband uplink.

The network has been operational with the configuration above for some time (problem was pre-existing when W2K3 SP1 was installed so this doesn't appear to be a factor). The network has been serving web sites and Exchange services for months (including OWA) without problems. Split DNS is configured. At this time the only issue I am aware of is this VPN failure. I assume I've missed something in my configuration of the VPN service however I am at a loss to determine what it might be. "[Confused]"

Let me know if there is additional specific diagnostic information that I can provide. Any tips that may lead me in the direction of a resolution are appreciated.

Thanks.
Rasha

Hi Rasha,

What VPN protocols are you using?

What errors appear on the Alerts tab in the ISA firewall console?

What errors appear in the Windows Event Viewer?

Thanks!
Tom

Tom,

Thanks in advance for whatever analysis/insight you may provide.

The currently enabled client access protocol is PPTP although a configuration with both PPTP and L2TP/IPSec has been tried as well. Altering these settings has not changed the symptoms when the client fails to connect.

No ISA alerts are appearing during the time period when a failed connection is attempted.

No Windows Event Log records are appearing on the ISA server during the time period when a failed connection atttempt is made.

Regards,
Rasha
