Very strange problems here with XP Pro and ISA server (with SP1) running in caching mode only. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry fot the length, but I wanted to relate all the facts.
We recently started deploying PC's with XP Pro. When we try to do a Windows Update from Internet Explorer V6, the PC is scanned for critical updates, we see a list of critical updates to download and when we click download and "agree", download progress window appears but NOTHING happens. No download progress etc. You can wait for hours and eventually connection just dies, and dialog box goes away.
I have tried using autodetect proxy in IE, tried putting in the IP address of ISA server - neither helped.
Tested network ports - OK, moved PCs to other network ports - same problem.
If I put the XP Pro PC on a network port that bypasses the ISA server, the Windows Update works fine. Very fast! So now I know it is an ISA/XP problem.
XP PCs are NOT running any firewall software and XP personal firewall is turned off. Remeber, they update fine if not going through the ISA server.
Now whats really weird is Windows Update works fine with NT4 PCs going through the same ISA server.
I've tried different XP PCs (laptops and desktops). Reinstalled XP Pro - same thing.
Been through the XP docs, help files, newsgroups etc. Can't find anything.
You need to enable "Use HTTP 1.1 through Proxy Connections" under the 'Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > (scroll down) HTTP 1.1 Settings in IE 6.0.
I am running XP Pro and had the same problem your having - I found doing the above resolves the problem.
