Is there a limit for cache/memory use? If I set percent of free memory (under cache config properties) below default of 50 then it disables caching. If I set it above 50 then I get the warning below.

Eventlog warning for webproxy svc. EventID 14193.
Cache was initialized with less memory cache than configured......
The server is running Win 2000 server (not advanced) and has 4GB of physical RAM.
Cache (because disks were available) has 80gig to play with.
This is installed in cache only mode.

There is no help anywhere for this so please help me..

Hi Nik,

Don't recall seeing that one before. I've always been able to change the amount of memory dedicated to the Web Proxy service.

Looks like it may be something to do with MS KB Q277863 and the 2GB app limit.

I'll post the final resolution (which I hope we'll get to). Please post here if you have a good relationship with MS and obtain an answer from them!

Hi Nic,

Try using the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file and see if that helps.

Thanks!

That is interesting that this error showed up then and that no one has seen it since. I have been using ISA on a w2k server and had no problem with memory utilization before. However, I am moving my ISA to a much larger server with Windows 2003. After intstalling it (with all the required service packs) to the new machine to test it two days ago, I got exactly the same message. The machine has 4GB of memory, but ISA won't use more than 50% of it. The machine registers no other errors. Clues anyone?

Apologies for not getting back sooner, it is the OS constraint of 2GB application (usermode) limit by default. The 3GB switch needs to be used to allow increased memory use by w3proxy. This switch can only be used on Win2k Advanced server or any version of Win2003.
MS do not recommend allowing w3proxy to take up all the user mode memory allocation - "it may have undesired and unpredicatable side-effects"
