Hi,

I've just installed ISA Server 2004 on our SBS Premium server.

The problem I'm having is that, aside from web browsing, users can't access any other internet services like email. This is a problem because we don't run our own email server at present and need to access the email server at our isp.

I think the problem is relating to authentication of the clients. I have installed the firewall client on all PCs and it reports that it connects ok. However when I check the ISA live log the "client username" field is often blank. This causes the default access rules to block the connection because the user is not authenticated. Web browsing works because it goes through the ISA proxy server, but other things do not work.

The strange thing is that "client username" seems to be valid for outgoing pop3 attempts but BLANK for outgoing SMTP attempts. All email clients are using Outlook 2002. I have no idea what's going on here.

To temporarily circumvent this problem I have added another access rule that allows outgoing access on the relevant pop3 and smtp ports to All Users. This makes email work because the ISA server doesn't care if the user is authenticated or not under this rule. However I would like things to be working properly.

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Thanks

Aaron

Was it working before you upgraded to ISA2004? Were you previously running ISA2000? Did this ever work?

The clients will try to authenticate anonymously first, fail and then successfully connect using username and password.

Does mail go out successfully?
What email client are you using?

Have you tried to use the POP Connector that is part of SBS? This is a great addition and other than the fact that you have to wait a bit to get your emails, you can have the server do all the work for you and then utilize exchange and all the collaboration features as well.
