Hi all,

i've been struggling with this for some time now and i can't seem to figure it out so i hope everybody will contribute to my problem.

Scenario:

Back-to-Back ISA with private IP
MS Exchange 5.5 on DMZ
MS Exchange 5.5 on local LAN

Getting the MSX on DMZ sending and receiving SMTP from the internet is no problem. The problem is that i want the DMZ server to forward it's mail over a X400 connector to the internal server. For the server to know if the address is internal or not it needs a GAL of the organization, so i need also directory replication.

What to do on the internal ISA? Create packet filters for X400 (TCP 102) inbound/outbound and RPC? Server publish my internal server? Protocol rules... Please help me here because i tried it and nothing works. Maybe i'm overlooking something.

Many, many thanks in advance

Brian

Hi Brian,

You'll have to figure how x400 works (I have no idea) and then create Server Publishing Rules for those protocols.

Might be time to change over to SMTP?

HTH,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Figure out how X400 works? Why? It flows over TCP 102 and that's it (i think)

The problem with SMTP is that my internal Exchange 5.5 got many MTA's. When installing the Exchange Internet Mail Connector the MTA's stops responding....this is 'by design'

I will try your option.

Tnx

If the DMZ server is acting as a relay host to the backend exchange system why not just set up a relay host? Configure the the backend server to recieve mail from the the dmz relay only and publish the backend server. Then configure the relay host to only relay for the internal backend exchange box?

In this way all external communication with the internal exchange server would have to come through the relay host and all external communication with foreign mail systems would be handled by the relay host.

Hi John,

Makes sense to me. I guess I'm just a dope about how the x400 fits into this scenario.

Thanks!

Tnx John,

that would be another option. I will try that.

Will let you know if it worked.
