I have ISA server running so that SNat and Firewall Clients can connect to it. It works well for the most part.

I have users that Play on the Net. Since it is not a Business environment that is using ISA, the ports are open for them to connect to the game servers.

The game in particular is Half-Life.

The problem is that you can connect to the server fine and play fine. But after about 10 minutes the connection drops!

The server they are connected to is not down.

The ISA server is running fine.

The Gammer then has to Close the game and Restart it to get back on the server.

Same thing happens every time.

Any Ideas why it is doing this?

I am running an All Open Policy right now to see if that would help but it hasn't.

If you need more information or Details I wil be more than happy to share them with you.

Hi Sherwood,

When you say the connection drops, are you referring to a dial-up connection?

Do you see any errors in the Event log or in the ISA Management console?

Does the game support multiple players behind a NAT server?

Thanks!

No dailup it is a cable connection. No errors as far as I can tell its like ISA just forgets the connection is there. It is weird. Yes it does support multiple gamers.. from what I can tell but it is happening even when there is only one gamer on at a time

I will post more information tonight as I will have a chance to work on it some more

OK there are no errors poping up when this happens... and the local network still shows the traffic for the game but nothing is getting out! Very weird.. Works for awhile and just stops...

Hi Sherwood,

Well, you've got me stumped! I am a total non-gamer, so I dont' have the skills or the resources to test this out. Hopefully some else on these boards will be able to lend some comfort

Thanks!

yeah I am stumped also.. Think I may have to uninstall networking and start from scratch setting up All networking... This really is annoying. Ran CommView on the packets and I dont see any indication for the them to drop.. It really has me stumped! It trolls happily along and then starts losing packets and dies. Something wierd is going on...

Hi Sherwood,

It could be something about the game itself. Do you play any other games? It would be interesting to see if the same thing happens with the other online games.

Yes, I do play other games online. I will check into them this weekend and let you know. I have played this game over ICS and it works fine.

Do you have RC1 of ISA? Did you upgrade from it?

If so, I would rebuild the box. I had issues with ISA even after applying SP1 but after rebuilding the box everything was cool.

When you are playing with multiple players do you force them to go out on different ports? I think you need to.

Could ISA be cacheing the connections? I find that I have to go to the main screen in HL and then back to the connection page to get into games at times. I don't get booted off though. weird. I have static IP and DSL.

My Server is running RC1 with the patches required to run ISA.
I have a static IP and Cable
Cache is not on on the server so It isn't caching the data.
I don't have trouble connecting to the server. most of the time. Some times when the game starts to render the Graphics it drops out and I reconnect just fine (this happened before ISA anyways). I actually use Gamespy to connect to the servers no problem. Just that 10 minutes in that it drops.

Hate to have to rebuild the ISA box as it is running Apache, Mail and several other services I need. But I think that is what I am going to do this weekend anyways.... I hate to have to do it but Oh Well....

BAH! I resetup the server and got it configured enough that it would connect to the net with Firewall client.

I also tried a different game... Unreal Tournament works great.. Half-Life still crashes...

Next step... HL reinstall....

Hi Sherwood,

Did you use this Protocol Definition for Half life?

Half Life Primary

Yup Sure did... First thing I made sure was in there before trying. I will however double check to make sure they are correct but I am quite sure they are...

Shouldn't be able to connect if they are not in there. Used the nice little link in the link section for the Game settings Microsoft ISA Server 2000
Game-Application Port Listing

thx

Hi Sherwood,

Then it remains a mystery. Keep working on it and please share any information you discover if you come up with a solution.

Thanks!

used the game settings link in the links section of the site. Worked great for me. But... Not using ISA anymore.. I gave up on getting Half-Life to work and got a new box that runs a linux firewall perfectly(not enought ump for W2kS and ISA). Demoted the W2kS Box to Workstation....

Got to use all those boxes you own you know... 8^)

Oh and funny thing is I still never got Half - Life to work beyond the 10 minutes or so...

Post in here if it works good for you.. I have it working no problem through a linux firewall so I am sure it is not my HL install that is messing things up.
