Hello!
I've been having a problem with Connectivity Verifier, more specifically with the alert action regarding no connectivity.
I've set up some Connectivity Verifiers (DNS, DHCP, web) and when ISA 2004 detects that there is no connectivity for one of the verifiers, it should also send an e-mail to our supervisor's mailbox and some other email addresses as well (that's set in the Alert Definitions).
The problem is that when the Connectivity Verifier fails to establish the connection ISA sometimes sends the email and sometimes it doesn't.
The Connectivity Verifier correctly reports the state of connection in the Dashboard page on ISA all the time (so the Verifier works OK), but when there is no connection, ISA doesn't always send an email. When it doesn't I get an Alert action failure in the Alerts page with the description: One or more of the actions associated with alert No connectivity has failed, due to configuration settings. The mail server may be down, or the specified command may not exist. Check the Event Viewer for related errors and fix them accordingly.
When I checked the Event Viewer I found no related errors. The only errors I found were those of the Connection Verifier (saying there is no connection).
BTW: The test e-mail message from ISA is successfully sent to and received by all the addresses. And the mail server was/is up all the time.
Is there a known reason/solution to this?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Jurca,
Is system policy configured to allow the message to reach the SMTP server?
Thanks! Tom

Yes. Well, not the system policy, there's a firewall policy allowing the message to reach the SMTP server from Local Host.
The problem is that the message sometimes arrives and at other times it doesn't. A policy would enable/disable the connection all together, wouldn't it? Not just from time to time.

Hi Jurca,
couldn't it be that the email isn't sended because it depends on one of services the connectivity verifiers raised an alert for?

Well that may be the case. Things that are verified are internal and external DNS servers, internal DHCP servers, domain controllers and our public web sites. I set the SMTP server (in the Alert Preferences) as an IP address and not as a FQDN and then some e-mail addresses to whom the email should be sent. Is it possible, that mail doesn't arrive because the DNS servers or domain controllers are down at that time?

Hi Jurca,
if you really want to know how it exactly works, I suggest you take a Network Monitor trace of those events.
