Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone had seen this in the eventviewer on their ISA server.

The error is event id:17240,
the description is "smtp command exceeded its allowed length"

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I've seen it and its due to the SMTP Filter. You can see the allowed lengths of the various commands in the SMTP Application Filter. However, it would get helpful to know which command generated the error message

Tom,
For the event id 17240. the description is smpt command exceeded its allowed length.

The data is N00p or Noop.

I am also seeing alot of events 17220 (UNKNOWN SMTP COMMAND. The commands are: X-EXPS GSSAPI, X-LINKS2STATE LAST, X-LINKS2STATE DROP, XEXCH501952

Any ideas on this stuff, its not in technet.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Most mail admins don't allow the NOOP command, since it not something you really need. You can remove it from the SMTP Application Filter or disable it at the mail server itself.

The other commands are Exchange specific. I believe you can add them if you want; however, I do not recall if this works or not

HTH,
Tom
